Chinese Queers Are Not Safe — And We Refuse to Be Silenced

At this year’s @pride.in.protest queer liberation conference, our member Cedric shared stories of censorship, displacement, and survival — from the Haitang arrests, to erased community spaces, to the violent silencing of queer Chinese migrants in Australia’s asylum system.

“We don’t just flee for ourselves. We flee to protect our families. And we never stop looking over our shoulder.”
“Our silence is not absence — it’s survival.”

This speech is a collective work — grounded in lived experiences from our community, and built upon the work of many.

We want to acknowledge and thank:

This includes Meiling, a trans woman whose story was part of this speech. After her protection claim was rejected, she returned to China and ended her life. Seeking help is not easy, but Meiling bravely tried.
It was the system that failed her.
We remember her.
Her story matters.
She deserved safety, care, and a future.

We also thank @pride.in.protest for holding space for these stories and queer refugees from around the world to be heard.

Our struggles are connected, and our solidarities must be too.
